The deeper the discharge, the significantly higher the probability of “rogue” cells developing within the battery pack, which accelerates overall battery aging. - Battery Sulfation
The primary reason lead-acid batteries become unusable is the accumulation of hard, dense layers of white lead sulfate crystals on the electrode plates. During charging, these crystals fail to convert back into active material, thereby diminishing the battery’s discharge capacity and ultimately causing it to “suffocate.” This process is known as sulfation.
Sulfation can be triggered by various factors, including excessive discharge depth, undercharging, or prolonged periods of inactivity. Over time, sulfation drastically degrades the performance of lead-acid batteries and shortens their lifespan. The direct symptom of sulfation is a reduction in the golf cart’s driving range—essentially, a decline in the battery’s overall capacity.
